I used to get very angry watching tv commercials... “why can't the trixx rabbit have his OWN cereal?!” I hated those snotty kids who taunted him, “trixx are for kids...” I boycotted trixx cereal, sticking to Lucky Charms. I was certain that the little leprechan could have as much of his cereal as he wanted. I supported the generosity of Lucky Charms. And ofcourse, it's magical deliciousness.
This brings me though to speculate... why in this country do we humanize food? Why do M and M's have to be living breathing characters? Are we supposed to like this living version of candy? Yes, it appears we are. These cute little talking candies are our friends. They are here FOR us, they like us. So what do we do? We EAT them. Do we get some kind of sick thrill out of pretending food is alive and can walk and talk and that we can befriend them, then grab them and eat them up?
What is this teaching? Stop laughing. I'm serious... ;-)
There's commercial showing “Chips-a-hoy cookies” actually DRIVING a car. Those smart cookies appear to have living souls. Suddenly a hand reaches down and snatches the cookie behind the wheel out of the car, eating it. Killing it. Murdering it. And what happens now that the driver cookie is gone? The passenger cookies... do they meet a tragic demise? IS that the way the cookies crumble?
What happens when the gigantic pitcher of koolaid fills up all our eager cups with it's bright red koolaid? Once empty, does it then lose IT'S life and sit dormant on a kitchen counter, the frosted glass fading, the smile and eyes disappearing? Do you know that that infamous pitcher of sugary water is actually called, “Koolaid MAN?”
I don't know, I just think it's weird.
