In the early seventies, broadway director/choreographer Michael Bennett put in an open call for broadway “gypsies” the talented, tough as nails chorus people. They held a mass group therapy, all telling stories of their search for stage work, success and childhoods. This therapy session was tape recorded and transcribed into what became the legendary “A Chorus Line.” I was tooling around youtube and discovered this amazing video of one of the BEST songs from the show, “At The Ballet” performed by the original cast members on a Phil Donahue episode. It was apparantly the 1990 closing of the show that prompted this reunion. (It had a fifteen year run and is currently having a fresh new revival on Broadway.) This video captures truly in my opinion one of the best musical theatre performances... acting, singing... in broadway history. Kelly Bishop (who won a Tony), Nancy Lane and Kay Cole playing Maggie who breaks up in the middle, yet pulls it together to show off her sensational voice. Watch as the other cast members cannot help but just weep during the song. Fasten your tear ducts...
